Australian art takes centre stage at ARTSingapore 2006

Art lovers will be able to see works from some of the best and brightest contemporary Australian artists when ARTSingapore opens later this week.

ARTSingapore 2006 features 70 art galleries from 14 countries, showcasing S$20 million worth of art by established and talented young artists from around the region. Australia is the first country to be featured at this annual event, now in its sixth year.

The vibrant new Arts Australia Pavilion at ARTSingapore showcases more than 20 artists from across Australia, converging in Singapore to highlight the diversity, uniqueness and high quality of contemporary Australian art.

“It is an honour to have Australian art featured so prominently at an event as significant as ARTSingapore 2006,” says Maurine Chong, Senior Trade Commissioner, Austrade Singapore. “Australian art has definitely come of age in the international arena. Aboriginal art in particular is gaining much attention among both serious art collectors and prestigious arts institutions, such as the Musée du Quai Branly, which is entirely dedicated to indigenous art and opened in Paris this year.

“Austrade Singapore has been working closely with Singapore galleries like Red Dot Gallery and Taksu Gallery to bring Aboriginal and contemporary Australian art to Singapore, and we are excited by the opportunities for Australian artists that will come about from our involvement in ARTSingapore 2006 – arguably one of the most important visual arts fairs in the region.”

A highlight of the Arts Australia Pavilion will be a unique exhibition of Australian glass art: 30 Years in Glass – The Art of Gerry King, featuring 15 glass sculptural works by the pioneer Adelaide-based artist and sculptor. This visually-stunning exhibition reflects Australia’s development of contemporary glass, which King’s career parallels. Visitors to the Arts Australia Pavilion at ARTSingapore can look forward to meeting Gerry King who is available to answer questions about his art work.
