Visitor Visas (non-ETAs)
If you do not hold a passport from an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)-eligible country, you will need to apply for a visitor visa at the Immigration Section during counter hours. For information about ETAs and ETA-eligible nationalities:
See: Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
To make an application for a Visitor Visa ( non-ETA)
Please note that in some circumstances, there are further requirements in addition to the supporting information in the above checklist. These may include:
- For children under 18 years of age, a letter of consent from the non-travelling parent/s (see Form 1229 at http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1229.pdf)
- For applicants 75 years of age or above, a medical clearance (staff will advise at time of lodgement of the application if this is required and will provide you with the documentation to be completed - the medical is not conducted at the High Commission)
- For applicants 75 years of age or above, health insurance (medical/hospital cover) for the full period of stay sought
- Additional background information for some applicants (see Form 1221 at http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1221.pdf)
- In certain circumstances depending on the purpose of your visit, full medical and/or x-ray examinations (staff will advise at time of lodgement of the application if this is required, and explain why this is required)
Service Standards
Visitor visa applicants should plan ahead and apply well in advance of their intended travel, to allow for additional checking if required in some circumstances. The standard processing time is 5 working days (10 working days for domestic helpers - refer to separate link). If additional checking is required, you will be advised about this at time of lodging the application. Whilst itineraries may be required, it is also recommended that you do not pay for travel prior to visa approval.
Important Note! Where possible, straightforward applications may be decided on-the-spot at time of lodgement to avoid applicants having to attend the High Commission a second time for passport collection. The discretion to do so rests entirely with the Immigration Section management depending on seasonal busy periods, complexity of the application and operational demands on the day. Even if your application was decided on-the-spot last time, you should still allow for a minimum of 5 working days (10 working days for domestic helpers).
