What is an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)?
- An ETA is an electronic authorisation for travel to Australia to visit or conduct short term business in Australia. It replaces a visa label or stamp in your passport. Passport holders from around 33 countries, including Singapore and Malaysia, are eligible for ETAs. See www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETAAus1En.html for a list of ETA-eligible countries.
- You can obtain a Visitor ETA to visit Australia for tourism or visiting relatives and friends.
- You can obtain a Business ETA to visit Australia for business meetings, conferences or to make short term business arrangements
- ETAs can be obtained from the Internet (www.eta.immi.gov.au), your travel agent or airline offices throughout Singapore. (ETAs are not available at the High Commission.)
- No application forms are required;
- Holders of ETAs can be processed more quickly on arrival in Australia.
The ETA system means travel agents and airline offices can be a 'one-stop-shop' providing usually an immediate answer; travel arrangements can be confirmed and a travel authority obtained while you wait.
The Australian Government does not charge travel agents and airlines for the use of the ETA system.
There are three types of ETAs for eligible passport holders.
| V (976) | Visitor/Tourist, 12 month validity with stays up to 3 months on each visit. Multiple travel. – No Australian Government charge. |
| BS (977) | Business Short validity, 12 months validity. Stay of up to three months on each visit. Multiple travel – No Australian Government charge. |
| BL (956) | Business Long validity, valid for life of passport. Stay of up to three months on each visit. Multiple travel. – Australian Government charge, payable by credit card. |
Further ETA Information
- An ETA allows for multiple visits to Australia for stays of up to three months at a time. The ETA is valid for 12 months or the life of the passport (whichever is shorter), but each visit must be less than 3 months.
- Travel agents and airline agencies may change a small service fee to process the ETA.
- It is recommended that you apply for an ETA at least 3 working days before you plan to travel.
- Business ETAs can also be used to make tourist visits to Australia.
- If you are NOT the holder of a passport issued by an ETA eligible country, you cannot obtain an ETA. Instead you will need to apply for a visitor visa at the Australian High Commission during counter hours.
e676 EU Accession Countries
EXPANSION OF THE e676 TO INCLUDE EU ACCESSION COUNTRIES
- Citizens from the UAE and Kuwait have been able to lodge 676 applications using the e-Visa system since 10 March 2003.
- Citizens from the Republic of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia are able to lodge applications for a subclass 676 Tourist (short stay) visa (e676) via the Internet. See www.immi.gov.au
- Citizens from these countries can apply on-line on form 48R (Internet) and pay the Visa Application Charge by credit card.
- Applicants granted an e676 visa will not need to post their passports to an Australian Embassy or Consulate for evidencing. Applicants will instead receive an e-mail or a letter (applicant will indicate their preferred method of communication in the application) notifying them that the visa has been granted and specifying visa validity and conditions.
- The helpdesk for 676 Internet applicants is evisa.676.helpdesk@immi.gov.au.
Help! My ETA was denied!
Important – changes to ETAs from April 2008
From 21 April 2008, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship is implimenting changes to the ETA system. In a small number of cases, we cannot immediately process your ETA. Please check back in 12 hours to confirm whether your application has been successful. Please apply for your ETA as early as possible to allow sufficient time for your application to be processed.
- If your travel agent (or the Internet application) checks back after 12 hours and was unable to grant you an ETA, they will get a message "Refer to Embassy". This DOES NOT mean that your application has been rejected or refused.
- ETA applications can be "referred to the Embassy" for many reasons.
- Your travel agent should be able to resolve this directly with the High Commission.
- If you applied through the internet and were not successful, you may either email or fax copies of the biodata page of your passport and rejection slip (together with contact details) to the Immigration Section at the High Commission (Fax No. 6735-1242) OR attend the office with your passport and rejection slip during our advertised business hours.
