Citizenship
The High Commission accepts applications from people seeking to acquire Australian citizenship. General information about becoming an Australian citizen is available on the Australian Immigration website: http://www.citizenship.gov.au.
Changes to Citizenship Legislation
On 1 March 2007, the Australian Citizenship Bill 2006 was passed by the Australian Parliament. The new legislation came into effect on 1 July 2007. Details can be seen at: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/law-and-policy/index.htm.
Citizenship Test Implications
Depending on your circumstances, there are different ways of becoming an Australian citizen. As a first step, you should carefully consider information available on the website of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Access the following: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/applying/index.htm and check out the links indicated.
From 1 October 2007, most people are required to pass a test before they apply for Australian citizenship by conferral. More information is available on the Australian Immigration website at: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/test/index.htm.
To prepare for the test you should read the booklet 'Becoming an Australian'. The booklet can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/test/resource-booklet/citz-booklet-full-ver.pdf. (Alternatively you may order a copy of the booklet on-line.)
You may sit the test in Singapore. If you wish to do so please send an email to our mailbox and provide the following information:
* Full Name
* Date and Place of Birth
* Date of Australian Permanent Residency
* Contact Details
* Nominate a day and time you would like to sit the test (allow at least three working days, as the test document will need to be requested from Australia).
Your test results will be assessed in Australia.
If you pass, you will be given specific details of how to proceed to the next stage, including submission of a formal application. Your application will be considered by the Overseas Citizenship Services Section of the Department of Immigration & Citizenship in Dandenong, Victoria.
If your application is approved, you will be invited to attend a conferral ceremony (eg in Singapore) at a mutually acceptable date and time.
The processes outlined above may take several months (mainly due to processing workloads in Australia).
You may only apply for an Australian passport after conferral of citizenship.
